Date Sold 3/23/2014Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Madame Butterfly, the 1932 Marion Gering Japan military shore-leave romantic interracial romantic melodrama (based on the play by David Belasco & John Luther Long, which was loosely based on the Puccini opera; about an American Naval officer in Japan who marries a Japanese girl, but is told by his superiors that he can't bring her back home, and he abandons her thinking that this will end their marriage, and he goes home and marries an American girl, and he returns three years later to discover that not only has his Japanese wife has waited for him, but she has their son to surprise him with!) starring Sylvia Sidney, Cary Grant, Charlie Ruggles, Irving Pichel, and Helen Jerome Eddy. Note that, as was common in early Hollywood, non-Asian actors were hired to play Asians, and they did this through the use of "yellowface" makeup (similar to "blackface" makeup that had been used for so long). Often, this was in movies that featured "interracial romances" between Asians and westerners, and those who participated in such romances were shunned and often they led to murders or suicides. Thankfully, these sorts of movies and the practice of actors performing in "yellowface" has almost completely been abandoned! It is sad because Hollywood had Anna May Wong, who would have been perfect for roles like this, but she could not get them due to the prejudices of the time. Also note that this still measures 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm]. Note that not only does our current auction of 999 stills represent the absolute finest selection we have ever had in terms of quality of image and film, but it also represents the finest CONDITION group of stills we have ever had! Half of the stills are graded as being in "very good to fine" condition (which is our highest grade for vintage stills), but we were very strict on this, because otherwise, perhaps two thirds or three quarters of the stills would have received this grade! We downgraded stills to "very good" for pretty minor defects, and many of these might have received our "very good to fine" grade in the past. And the half of the stills that ARE in very good to fine condition would likely be graded "mint" by any other auction! This is the finest group of stills I have ever seen, and I can only hope to equal it someday! Condition: very good to fine. The still is in very nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
