An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie 7 3/4" x 11" [20 x 28 cm] Key Book Still (Learn More) The Devil's Circus, the 1926 Benjamin Christensen silent romantic love triangle circus performer melodrama ("Behind the Scenes of Circus Life"; from the story by by Benjamin Christensen; a wild story of a young girl who falls in love with a handsome pickpocket, but he is sent to jail, and desperate, she goes to work in a circus, doing a high wire act over an open lion cage; the lion tamer falls in love with her, but his girlfriend is insanely jealous, and she sabotages the high wire, and the girl falls and is severely injured; seven years later, the pickpocket is released from jail and becomes an honest shoemaker and marries his former girlfriend; but when he learns about what the lion tamer did, he seeks revenge, but discovers that the man was injured during the war and has become a blind beggar!) starring Norma Shearer, Charles Emmett Mack, Carmel Myers, John Miljan, and Claire McDowell. Note that a February 6th, 1926 Film Daily article mentioned that Karl Dane was one of the cast, but his scenes were removed from the final film. We are not sure what his role would have been but we have seen stills featuring Dane in a black & white Pierrot clown costume. Finally, note that acclaimed Danish director Benjamin Christensen came to the U.S. in 1926 and directed this movie, followed by six more. Three of the seven films are lost. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this still is unlike almost all key book stills we have ever seen (we had a handful like this over the years, including two from 1924's "Flesh and the Devil")! Not only does it have an image of nine great still images joined together, but it also has full credits and a complete plot summary printed on the back! It is glued to a linen-like backing and it has an extra 1" on the left with two punch holes. Apparently this was something that was done beginning in 1924, and we had thought that it was a very brief experiment, but now we have seen another one from 1937, so we know it continued for at least thirteen years, but they are really incredibly rare and really cool! Condition: very good. Learn More about condition grades
