A Folded French Protest Poster (measures 18 1/2" x 29" [47 x 74 cm]) (Learn More) Liberte Des Peuples (literally translates to "People's Freedom"), the late 1960s French poster protesting American involvement in Palestine, and featuring screen printed artwork of a sword-wielding, one-eyed Statue of Liberty impaling a "Palestine" man, and holding a book with a Star of David on it. Note that protests in 1968 comprised a worldwide escalation of social conflicts, predominantly characterized by popular rebellions against state militaries and bureaucracies. Beginning in May 1968, a period of civil unrest occurred throughout France, punctuated by demonstrations, general strikes, and the occupation of universities and factories. At the height of events, which have since become known as May 68, the economy of France came to a halt, political leaders feared civil war, and the national government briefly ceased to function after President Charles de Gaulle secretly fled to West Germany. The protests were about many issues, such as capitalism, workers rights, American imperialism and the Vietnam war, Gaullism, and more. The protests are often linked to similar movements around the same time worldwide which inspired a generation of protest art in the form of songs, graffiti, posters, and slogans. Students and teachers at the prestigious art school Ecole des Beaux-Arts were part of the revolt, and they and many others created protest posters (mostly screen-printed) that straddled the line between art and propaganda. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French poster!
