An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Duck Soup, the classic 1933 Leo McCarey musical political satire screwball comedy (Groucho is named the new ruler of a bankrupt country, Freedonia, and he declares war on a neighboring country, and his brothers Chico and Harpo are incredibly inept spies!) starring the Four Marx Brothers: Groucho Marx (as Rufus T. Firefly), Harpo Marx (as Pinky), Chico Marx (as Chicolini), and Zeppo Marx (as Lt. Bob Roland), and also starring Margaret Dumont, Raquel Torres, and Louis Calhern NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this window card, 18 years ago for $4,791, and 21 years ago for $3,838! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a heavy paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. Prior to paperbacking, the window card was found in the back of a frame and it was trimmed to 12" x 16". This means that the entire title area, the bottom of Groucho's cigar, and the bottom of Chico's neck and Zeppo's chin were missing. Also, the right half of Zeppo's head, to the right of his features, and most of the "S" of "BROTHERS" was also missing. The portion that was present had a few creases and scuffs, with tiny surface paper loss in the "MA" of "MARX" and in Zeppo's hair, but a tiny area in each case. Overall, the window card was in fair condition prior to paperbacking. A talented restorer did an excellent job replacing the missing areas, and the window card will display nicely on the new owner's wall, but you can see signs of the restoration, and bear in mind the extent of the restoration before bidding on this card. Note that we have graded this window card "fair to good", to alert bidders to the restoration it has had, but it certainly could also be graded as "apparent good to very good"!
