The Covered Wagon, the classic 1923 James Cruze silent winning-the-West pioneer wagon train romantic adventure cowboy western ("The cowards never started - The weak died on the way"; "Out where thrills began"; "A wonder picture that Will thrill you"; "From the novel by Emerson Hough"; "With hearts fortified by love they braved the perils of the plains"; one of the most major westerns of the 1920s, it was made at a time when westerns were thought to be losing their popularity, but this movie single-handedly revived the genre; set in 1848, about two wagon trains that travel from Kansas City to California and Oregon via the Oregon Trail, and the great difficulties they encounter along the way) starring Lois Wilson, J. Warren Kerrigan, Alan Hale Sr., Charles Ogle, Ethel Wales, Ernest Torrence, Tully Marshall, Guy Oliver, John Fox, Tim McCoy (who is billed as an "Indian liaison"), and Jack Padjan. Note that Paramount gave this movie a really major release, and virtually every poster on the movie has completely different artwork from all the other posters! Note that the advertising for this movie states that "3,000 actors spend 3 months on a location 80 miles from the railroad. 1,000 Indians were used and the livestock included 600 oxen, 1,000 horses, and 500 mules"!

Important Added Info: The Kodascope Library was Kodak's film rental library system. In the mid-1930s, it had a catalogue of approximately 700 1920s silent movies (mostly films from Paramount, Warner Bros. and First National) that were available for rental with a paid subscription to the service. The movies were copied from the original negatives and were produced on a stable non-nitrate, high-quality film, and were typically available in 5 reels, and individuals would rent these silent movies (and likely show them to organizations, perhaps in schools, churches or other public venues). There was also a simpler children's version of this called "Kodatoy" that wealthier families could buy so that their kids could watch silent movies at home! We were consigned 28 different groups of keybook stills which were used with the Kodascope Library (they were surely shown to prospective renters of movies, to help them choose which movies they wanted to rent). Each of the groups of keybook stills has a black cover sheet that comes with them that has information from the Kodascope Libraries together with the rental price (and in many cases, the listed price has been lowered by hand). While these keybook stills were used in the mid-1930s, we believe that they are originals from when the movies first came out in the mid-1920s. Note also that these keybook stills have been mounted to a linen type material and have an extra 1" at the top or left of the still, along with punch holes in that extra area (see our images). THOUGH ONLY EIGHT OF THE STILLS ARE PICTURED, THE HIGH BIDDER ON THIS LOT WILL RECEIVE 11 STILLS FROM THIS MOVIE (but realize that on some of these lots with 9 or more stills there may be a few duplicates, mostly on post-1960 lots)! We realize there is an element of gambling to this, but we made only a small effort to find the best stills in these lots, and, if you have any willingness to gamble at all, you may find that you get some great stills that were not pictured! Please do NOT bid on this lot unless you can accept that you are only seeing eight of the stills. Note that these stills measure 8" x 10 3/4" [20 x 27 cm].
