An Original 1949 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 44 3/4" x 60 1/2" [114 x 154 cm]) (Learn More) Ladri di Biciclette (released in the U.S. in 1949 as "The Bicycle Thief" and in England as "Bicycle Thieves"), the classic 1948 Vittorio De Sica Italian neorealist melodrama ("Academy Award outstanding foreign language film 1949"; about a man and his son who search for a vital missing bicycle; most people rightfully consider this one of the handful of absolute finest movies ever made!) starring Lamberto Maggiorani, Enzo Staiola, Lianella Carell, Gino Saltamerenda, and Vittorio Antonucci. Note that the Italian title literally translates to "The Bicycle Thieves", but for unknown reasons, the movie became "The Bicycle Thief" when it was released in English-speaking countries! Also note that French posters from the first few years after World War II are among the most rare posters there are! Apparently, there were still major paper shortages in France, and few posters were printed, and most were recycled. Condition: fair. Many years ago (likely when the poster was first created), it was backed onto a thin linen and the linen was folded around the edges and sewed. This was done so that posters would last far longer than if they were unbacked, and that is almost surely true in this case, because the poster would likely have separated on the folds and been thrown out. In addition, the film was used in Holland, and a Dutch title was completely painted over the original title, and two Dutch words "een" and "van" were painted before and after the word "FILM" in the top right corner. While this poster can be removed from the thin linen, it is extremely likely that the painted over areas have had the paint completely bond into the poster, so that the paint CAN'T be removed, and can only be repainted over with the correct words. So this poster has really significant defects, and bear them in mind (and the cost of restoration, if you chose to restore it) before bidding on this incredibly rare poster.
