An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel Movie Poster (measures 43" x 61 1/2"; known as a 'grande' poster in France) (Learn More) Der Flug ums Leben (released in France by Pathe Freres in 1913 as "L'Envol pour la Vie" which literally translates to "The Take-Off for Life", and we don't know if the movie was released in the U.S., although it likely was), the 1912 Paul Otto German Duskes Film silent airplane aviation adventure rescue thriller starring Willy Rothe. This was surely one of the first aviation movies ever! The French poster for this movie has a really great image of a man in a primitive glider rescuing a girl who is perched atop a lighthouse that is engulfed in flames. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "country of origin" poster for this French movie! Also note that this French one-panel measures 43" x 61 1/2". Condition: good. The poster had tears and tiny areas of paper loss down most of the vertical foldline, and a diamond-shaped area of tears at the bottom crossfold. There was a diamond-shaped area of tears in the top crossfold, with some paper loss in the left wheel of the glider the man is flying. There was a 10" diagonal tear in the bottom of the orange area at the upper right of the poster, with some tears branching off of it. There were creases, tears, and small areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. The poster was linenbacked many years ago on a thin linen. The person who linenbacked it did slight restoration to the above defects, but they are still pretty noticeable. If I owned this poster, I would surely have it re-backed, and have it properly restored. After restoration by a talented professional, the poster would look great, and, while it would have restoration on most of the folds, I DON'T believe it would have that heavily restored "dipped in paint" look, and that it would look great on anyone's wall! This poster was linenbacked, and it had significant defects which were only somewhat repaired during the linenbacking process, or were not repaired at all (we describe both the defects as well as the quality of the restoration below, and based on those comments, you can easily determine which type of poster it is). You should also look at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!).
