Schoedsack Africa New York City giant ape fantasy romantic love triangle adventure horror thriller ("'The most awesome thriller of all time' the one and only"; "Not beast.. Not human.... Not devil.. Cooper"; based on the story by Edgar Wallace, with incredible special effects by Willis O'Brien) starring Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong (as Carl Denham), Bruce Cabot, Frank Reicher, and Sam Hardy NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster is undated, but we believe it to be from a 1950s Danish re-release. Note that the artist drew Fay Wray with one of her breasts having popped out of her dress, a scene that definitely does NOT appear anywhere in the movie (or on any posters we are aware of, other than from the Danish re-release, and the Danish program from the same release). We have sold another example of this poster, and also a very similar poster that lacked the blue coloring (which we thought to be from another 1950s or 1960s re-release), but both of those posters had the entire Danish tagline blacked over (obviously because they were used in a country that did not speak Danish!), and the poster that is identical to this sold for $3,100, in spite of that major defect! THIS poster does not have that tagline blacked over, which is of course much better! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards.
UPDATED 07/11/2014: Note that a knowledgeable collector pointed out that this poster is likely a 1950s re-release and not 1940s as we initially listed. We have updated the auction accordingly. Also, as mentioned above, the artist drew Fay Wray with one of her breasts having popped out of her dress, and we initially covered that area of the photo with white bars. However, because this feature makes this poster so unique and interesting, we have removed the tiny white bars (you may need to "Refresh" the image to see it without the tiny white bars). Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had separation and a few tiny tears on the foldlines. It had a 4" uneven tear at the top center of the poster directly above Kong's shoulder, and some tears in the left and right of the bottom horizontal fold, going into the letters of the title. It had many tears and areas of paper loss around the edges and a foreign censor stamp at bottom right. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. Someone simply paperbacked the poster and only performed the slightest of restoration to the above defects, filling in the missing paper around the edges with blank white paper and then slightly coloring it to match. Certainly, many people could display this poster just as it is, or a talented restorer could remove it from the thin paper backing and properly restore it, after which it will look great!
