An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 41 3/4" [71 x 106 cm]) (Learn More) Sir Hall Caine's The Christian, the 1923 Maurice Tourneur silent London England romantic love triangle doomed romance religious melodrama ("Adapted from the famous novel and play by Sir Hall Caine"; "Maurice Tourneur's mammoth production of The Christian"; produced by Goldwyn Pictures; a wild story of a man who plans to become a monk, but when the woman he loves becomes an actress, he devotes his life to try to save her soul, but then he is attacked by an angry mob, but fortunately, as he is dying, his former love tells him that she does love him, and he dies happily) starring Richard Dix, Mae Busch, Gareth Hughes, Phyllis Haver, Mahlon Hamilton, and Cyril Chadwick NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned three lobby cards, four 8x10 stills, a pressbook, and a glass slide from this movie (and NO other movie paper of any kind) until we received this one-sheet! Also note that this one-sheet measures 28" x 41 3/4" [71 x 106 cm]. In the late 1910s through the early 1930s, MGM (and sometimes Paramount and a couple of other studios) would often make a regular one-sheet for a movie and, instead of a second style regular one-sheet, would instead make a special "rotogravure" one-sheet. Named after the rotogravure picture sections at the time popular in Sunday newspapers, these one-sheets would be printed in a single color, often sepia, but sometimes other colors, and they would usually incorporate pictorial images from the movie combined in a montage fashion. Very few rotogravure one-sheet have survived, since they were printed on the same paper stock used in newspapers of the time, and the paper is very fragile and often darkens. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny tears and tiny paper loss on parts of the folds. It had some stains around the edges, with a few scattered down the center. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
