An Original Vintage Theatrical Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Moulin Rouge, the 1934 Sidney Lanfield Paris France identical twin romantic musical comedy (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; "A Darryl F. Zanuck Production"; about identical twin French entertainers, and one of them is married, and her husband wants her to quit working, so she switches places with her unmarried sister, and then the husband goes to see the person he thinks is his sister-in-law, but it is really his wife, and she tries to get him to cheat on her with her sister, who is really her!) starring Constance Bennett (in a dual role as identical twins!), Franchot Tone, Tullio Carminati, Helen Westley, and Lucille Ball (in one of her early uncredited roles!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this half-sheet, and that was 19 years ago, when it sold for $374! Not only that, but all first release posters from this movie are incredibly rare, and we have only previously auctioned two window cards and a one-sheet 29 years ago, which auctioned for $4,950! Note that this poster was gel backed, and while it could be rolled and sent in a tube, we would worry that doing so would either damage the poster or bring back the folds. Therefore, we would much prefer to send it in a large flat package. However, if the new buyer insists, we will send it in a tube, but only if they accept responsibility for doing so. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The poster had tiny bits of paper loss scattered on the horizontal fold. It had a lesser amount of tiny paper loss in small parts of the vertical fold. It had paper loss in the bottom center of the image, in the right edge of the red circle and affecting the tiny show girls next to it. It had paper loss and staining in the top of the trees below the "RYL" of "DARRYL". It had some tears and small paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the poster (meaning they backed the poster onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the poster still looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. Given the poster's defects described above, the restorer did a generally nice job, but you can still clearly see some signs of the defects and the restoration of the defects in parts of the poster, but the poster displays pretty well (see our super-sized images to get a good sense of exactly how the poster looks now).
