An Original Vintage Exhibitor Magazine (measures 9 1/2" x 12 1/4" [24 x 31 cm]; 16 pages) (Learn More)

The Hollywood Reporter, the film entertainment news magazine featuring articles on current projects of the time and much news and information about stars & directors as well as some very cool ads! Amazingly, it was published for many decades, starting in September 3, 1930, and it was published six days a week, 52 weeks a year! Most issues were around 8 pages, with the Saturday issue usually being 4 pages, but sometimes studios would take out four, eight, twelve page or larger ads that would make individual issues much bigger. Also, once a year, this film industry standard did a special "anniversary issue" that was hundreds of pages long. Everybody who was anybody in the business was compelled to take out an ad, and your standing in the industry was judged by how big an ad you took out! There were two daily publications like this, the other being Variety, and they were highly competitive with each other. In 2007, this magazine surpassed The Hollywood Reporter in total distribution, making it the number one entertainment daily (initially, it solely focused on Hollywood, but over the years, it expanded to include all forms of entertainment). Note that because this was a daily paper, the vast majority of people threw it away, just as they did all daily newspapers. Finding any issues of this from decades ago is incredibly difficult, and finding a specific issue is like finding a needle in a haystack, because it seems that nobody saved them!
Important Added Info: Note that this magazine contains a very special poster! Universal had spent a lot of money hiring Alberto Vargas to do the sexy pinup of Marlene Dietrich used on several of the posters, and they wanted to make additional use of it when they promoted the movie to theater owners. So they printed a special 12 1/4" x 23 1/4" poster, and they had it inserted into an issue of The Hollywood Reporter as a fold-out (like a Vargas centerfold in Esquire magazine)! We can only imagine how readers of that daily magazine reacted when they opened the new issue and saw this centerfold, which is all the more striking, because it has a solid background and no writing at all other than Vargas' signature. The fold-out flap had the credits for the movie on it and there were four other pages in the issue for the film which solely had the name of the movie and a different credit in the top of each page (oddly, on the page for Bruce Cabot, they included a photographic image of him, perhaps so he wouldn't feel slighted by the Dietrich fold-out). The magazine also has its regular 10 pages. In the past, we were once consigned an example of the fold-out that had been removed from the magazine and linenbacked, and it sold for $495. We don't know if this fold-out ad was only placed in The Hollywood Reporter, or if it was also placed in other exhibitor magazines, because we have never seen any other magazines with this incredible fold-out. Obviously, the new owner could keep the magazine intact, or remove the fold-out and frame it as is, or have it linenbacked, but whatever they decide to do, they will certainly have an incredible poster that is very rare!

Condition: very good. The fold-out of Dietrich by Vargas is in wonderful condition. The rest of the magazine has some tears in the last six pages, which were repaired with clear tape. But we highly doubt anyone cares about the rest of the magazine compared to the wonderful fold-out!
