An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Beggar's Opera, the 1953 Peter Brook English crime musical comedy ("Wanted by the law and by all the women whom he promised to marry"; "The Highwayman, Capt. Macheath"; "The story of Captain Macheath, the amorous highwayman who broke so many laws and so many hearts!"; "Ah woman... I love the sex!"; based on the 1728 ballad opera by John Gay) starring Laurence Olivier ("as MacHeath the Highwayman"; "He sings.. In John Gay's immortal satire with music"; in his only musical!), Stanley Holloway, George Devine, Mary Clare, and Hugh Griffith NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this still was consigned to us by legendary collector/dealer Marty Davis! Marty was hired in 1972 to evaluate the entire collection of W. Ward Marsh (1893-1971), who was the film critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper from 1919, until his retirement in 1970. In 1919 Marsh wrote his first of 23,000 movie reviews for the Plain Dealer. Marsh died less than a year after his retirement in 1970. His library, and photographic and memorabilia archives were given to the proprietor of Cleveland's finest bookstore. Marty Davis was the first person with a background in film history and collectibles to examine the archives. He worked for three to four hours a day, for six months, and his compensation was his pick of the archives. This still is from the W. Ward Marsh archives, and it was stamped on the back by Marty Davis to indicate that it came from this legendary collection. Also note that this still appears in every way to be original U.S. release EXCEPT that there is one very tiny line of French type in the lower right. It reads, "IMPRIME AUX ETATS-UNIS D'AMERIQUE". A collector has told us that he believes this means the still was printed for use in areas that included French-speaking parts of Canada, but that it WAS printed in the U.S., and that makes complete sense to us (and we have seen this on stills from the 1940s through the early 2000s, so it has certainly been done for an extremely long time)! So it is an original still from 1953, but it was printed partially for use in French-speaking Canada. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
