The Spirit of Notre Dame, the 1931 Russell Mack college university football sports melodrama ("Dedicated to the memory of Knute Rockne!"; produced by Carl Laemmle Jr.; loosely based on the life of Knute Rockne, who died just before the movie was finished filming; about a Notre Dame coach and a brash young star, and how the coach assigns the star to block for another teammate to teach him humility, and he refuses, which causes him to be benched, but during the climactic Army game, he comes into the game and helps them win; there is also a subplot about the coach and a player in the hospital, obviously based on the real-life George Gipp) starring Lew Ayres, William Bakewell, Sally Blane, J. Farrell MacDonald, and Andy Devine, as well as a host of actual college football stars including "The Four Horseman" (Don Miller, James Crowley, Elmer Layden, and Harry A. Stuhldreher), and "Notre Dame's Greatest Stars" Frank Carideo ("All-American Quarterback"), Larry ("Moon") Mullins, John Law, Adam Walsh, John J.
