An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French Large Movie Poster (31x47; measures 31 3/4" x 47 1/4" [81 x 120 cm]) (Learn More) Captain Blood, the 1924 David Smith silent pirate swashbuckling romantic action adventure melodrama ("The greatest love story ever told"; based on the novel by Rafael Sabatini) starring J. Warren Kerrigan (in the title role as Captain Peter Blood), Jean Paige, Charlotte Merriam, James Morrison, and Allan Forrest. Note that this movie was remade in 1935 and Errol Flynn played the lead role, and it was a huge success. That caused this earlier silent version to be completely forgotten by everyone except for film buffs. Movie paper from this 1924 version is virtually non-existent! We have never sold any first release U.S. poster or lobby card (we did have a glass slide and a few stills), and we have never had any first release non-U.S. posters, except for a French poster! Unfortunately, only 30 minutes of the film still exists. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Rene Peron Important Added Info: Note that, as was commonly done in France at this time, two different sets of posters were created for this movie. One was for the release in Paris and other large cities, and another was for the release in the provinces (those posters are marked "rural"). Both posters are from the first release of the movie. The poster offered here is from the release in the provinces (note the "PATHE-RURAL" at top left), and when it was shown, it was shown along with short features that were credited in the bottom left (it translates to "also showing a comedy called 'It Was Friday the 13th' by James 'Paul' Parrott and shorts about coffee, Mount Etna, and Ivory hunters"). We don't know if the Paris poster had this same great Rene Peron artwork, because we have never seen or heard of another French poster! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at the bottom two center crossfolds, with larger paper loss at the top center crossfold and very tiny paper loss at the other crossfolds. There were some creases, small tears, and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some foldlines and some pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
