Date Sold 8/20/2015Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Casablanca, the classic 1942 Michael Curtiz (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) anti-Nazi World War II (WWII) romantic love triangle melodrama ("From a play by Murray Burnett and June Alison"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; it is interesting to note that the movie was made while World War II was being fought, and at a point when it seemed very real that Germany might take over the entire world, and in that context, the strong emotions expressed throughout the movie are all the more poignant, given what was going on in the world at that time) starring Humphrey Bogart (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as "Rick", Richard Blaine), Ingrid Bergman (as Ilsa Lund), Paul Henreid (as Victor Laszlo), Claude Rains (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Renault), Conrad Veidt (as Major Strasser), Sydney Greenstreet (as Signor Ferrari), Peter Lorre (as Ugarte), S.Z. Sakall (as Carl), Dooley Wilson (as Sam), Madeleine LeBeau (as Yvonne), Leonid Kinskey (as Sascha), John Qualen (as Berger), Marcel Dalio (as Emil, the croupier at the roulette wheel), Corinna Mura (as the cabaret singer who plays the guitar and sings "La Marseillaise"), Helmut Dantine (as the young man playing roulette), and Joy Page (as Dantine's girlfriend, who is willing to sleep with Rains) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this lobby card is from the most famous scene in the film at the climax, where the four main characters are gathered at Rick's cafe, and Bogart double-crosses Claude Rains on the names to be entered on the "letters of transit". It is referred to in the hobby as the "letters of transit" scene, and it is the most desired Casablanca lobby card! Obviously, one would prefer to find a better condition example of this card, but the last one we had (which was in "very good" condition) auctioned for $5,700! Condition: good. The card had paper loss in the top corners and some tiny paper loss in the rest of the blank borders. The card was folded on each side just to the edge of the image (no doubt it was displayed like an 8x10). There were many stains and smudges scattered throughout the image, including some in the stars' faces, with heavy creasing around the edges of the image where it had been folded. A talented restorer gel backed the card (meaning they backed the card onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing. The card was in "fair" condition prior to being restored. You can still tell that the card has had significant restoration to the image and title area, but the card displays pretty well from a reasonable viewing distance. But bear in mind the extensive restoration this card has had (look at our super-sized image) and the extent of the defects before placing a bid on it. Learn More about condition grades
