An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 8 3/4" x 12 3/4" [22 x 32 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Ace in the Hole (also released as "The Big Carnival"), the classic 1951 Billy Wilder crime newspaper journalism film noir ("Written by Billy Wilder, Lesser Samuels and Walter Newman"; about a washed-up newspaperman who finds a man trapped in a cave-in and delays his rescue to get a better story!) starring Kirk Douglas, Jan Sterling, Robert Arthur (billed as "Bob Arthur"), Porter Hall, Frank Cady, and Richard Benedict. Most people believe that this movie was first released under the title "Ace in the Hole", but that when it was not very well received, the studio quickly created all new paper with the new title "The Big Carnival" (perhaps to confuse people as to the subject matter of the movie). Most collectors treat the movie paper with either title as "first release", but some collectors consider the material with "Ace in the Hole" to be less common, and therefore more desirable! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this still has been trimmed and it now measures 8 3/4" x 12 3/4" [22 x 32 cm]. Also note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock. Note that this still was consigned to us by legendary collector/dealer Marty Davis! Marty was hired in 1972 to evaluate the entire collection of W. Ward Marsh (1893-1971), who was the film critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper from 1919, until his retirement in 1970. In 1919 Marsh wrote his first of 23,000 movie reviews for the Plain Dealer. Marsh died less than a year after his retirement in 1970. His library, and photographic and memorabilia archives were given to the proprietor of Cleveland's finest bookstore. Marty Davis was the first person with a background in film history and collectibles to examine the archives. He worked for three to four hours a day, for six months, and his compensation was his pick of the archives. This still is from the W. Ward Marsh archives, and it was stamped on the back by Marty Davis to indicate that it came from this legendary collection. Condition: good to very good. The still was trimmed.
