An Original Vintage One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh) (Learn More) Edna Ferber's Show Boat, the 1929 Harry A. Pollard epic romantic riverboat musical ("Carl Laemmle has the honor to present Universal's Motion Picture triumph"; "Carl Laemmle's Universal motion picture triumph!"; "The greatest show in theatrical history"; "Combined with the musical hits from the Ziegfeld stage production by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein 2nd"; "See and hear the original Ziegfeld stars"; "from the novel by Edna Ferber"; "From the stage play by Ziegfeld"; produced by Carl Laemmle; written by Oscar Hammerstein II, with music by Hammerstein and Jerome Kern) starring Laura La Plante (as Magnolia), Joseph Schildkraut, Otis Harlan, Alma Rubens, Emily Fitzroy, Jane La Verne, Helen Morgan, Jules Bledsoe, Tess Gardella (billed as "Aunt Jemima"), Stepin Fetchit, and the Plantation Singers (billed as "with the 'Plantation Singers' singing the songs that made them famous"). Note that this film was originally made as a silent film, but some hasty re-shoots and an added prologue were included in a part-talkie part-singing version that was released at the same time, but most of the talking and singing parts have been lost (but hopefully someone will rediscover them someday). Universal remade the movie in 1936, and that includes Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River", and it was remade again in 1951, but it is unlikely to ever be remade again, due to the unfortunate stereotypes of black African Americans presented in the movie (but which were accurate to how African Americans were treated at the time).
