An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 28" x 40 3/4" [71 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

United States Official War Films, the circa 1918 World War I (WWI) poster promoting propaganda movies and featuring Kerr art of silhouetted soldiers marching and firing an artillery cannon against a background of red, white and blue stripes, with the Great Seal of the United States at bottom. Note that this was one of a number of posters created to promote the Film Division, one of the most important branches of the Committee on Public Information. The Division produced three major feature films to promote the war effort: Pershing's Crusaders, America's Answer and Under Four Flags. These films, along with several one reel films, brought the heroism of soldiers on the front lines closer to home.
Artist: Kerr

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded. It had many tears and small areas of paper loss in the top 4", with some discoloration. It also had tears and paper loss in the bottom, extending up to 4" into the black background at left. There were some tiny bits of paper loss and pinholes scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone many years ago mounted the poster onto a thin linen with little excess and did fairly amateur restoration to the above defects. If I owned this great poster, I would have it removed from the old linen and properly re-backed, and it would mostly only have restoration in the top and bottom background areas and in the blank borders, so it will display well. However, bear all of the above in mind before bidding on this poster.
