An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Winchester '73, the classic 1950 Anthony Mann revenge cowboy western ("The Gun that Won the West"; about a man who wins a very special repeating rifle in a shooting contest, only to have it stolen from him, and his quest to regain ownership of it, and the many hands that it passes through) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea, Stephen McNally, Millard Mitchell, Charles Drake, John McIntire, Will Geer (as Wyatt Earp), Jay C. Flippen, Rock Hudson (in a small role as a Native American Indian), Tony Curtis (in a small role as a young soldier; billed as "Anthony Curtis"), and Steve Brodie NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release movie paper from this classic western has always been somewhat difficult to obtain. This is likely both because the movie was given a quick re-release in 1958, and also because it has obvious strong appeal to anyone who owns or has owned one of these rifles! But the first release half-sheets are even more rare than the one-sheets. We have never auctioned this 1950 first release half-sheet before! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had rough creases on both folds and creases and tears in parts of the borders, with darkening down the right edge of the right border. There were a few creases in the right border that extended into the image background. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Note that the restorer left a tiny bit of excess linen around all four sides of the poster (they left a small border in order to protect the poster from handling damage, but they did not leave a larger border, to allow it to more easily fit in a frame).
