An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More)

Vengeance, the 1927 Alan James (billed as "Alvin Neitz") German Shepherd canine dog crime action thriller short starring Eileen Sedgwick (one of the only true cowgirl stars of the silent era, she had starred in serials for years, and when westerns became popular in the mid-1920s, she starred in several of those) and Lightnin' the Police Dog. Note that Lightnin' The Police Dog apparently appeared in 12 shorts between 1924 and 1927, but we have only seen one-sheets on some of them (not surprising, because very few theaters would have ordered one-sheets for shorts by the mid 1920s!). Apparently in 1927, some enterprising distributor re-edited the 12 short films into a single serial, called "The Spider's Net", and released that to theaters (one possibility for why this occurred might be that Gary Cooper had had a role in one of the shorts, which let them advertise it as a "Gary Cooper" serial!). But we have never seen any advertising on "The Spider's Net". Finally, note that there was a later canine movie star named "Lightning" (not "Lightnin'"), who appeared in 8 movies between 1934 and 1937 (and the two dogs get confused in some databases). Note that this movie is not in the IMDb, which in the past caused us to mistakenly think it was a re-release of an earlier "Lightnin'" movie (and we chose "Lightnin' Wins", because at that time, that was the only earlier "Lightnin'" movie we had had a poster on). But since that time, we have had several "Lightnin'" movies that are not in the IMDb, and it seems far more likely that those same stars simply also appeared in several "Lightnin'" movies, and that the IMDb has never gotten the credits from the missing ones, which includes this one (that happens with a lot of shorts). You can see a short featuring Lightnin' at this Youtube link. If anyone knows more about any of these movies or Lightnin' The Police Dog, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we can't be certain that this poster is from a re-release of "Lightnin' Wins", but it is the only movie that has these two top stars and the director. Since this was a silent short, it seems highly unlikely it would have been re-released in the 1930s, and since we would imagine that Gary Cooper would have been mentioned on a re-release from after 1928 (when he became a star), it seems likely to be from a 1927 re-release. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good. The poster had tears and areas of paper loss scattered down the center 2" of the top quarter of the poster and also some at the bottom two crossfolds and in the bottom 5" of the vertical foldline. There was a lesser amount of wear on the horizontal folds and some creases, tears, and areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
