An Original Vintage French Newspaper Supplement (measures 15 1/4" x 22 1/2" [39 x 57 cm]) (Learn More)

Adolphe Willette was a French painter, illustrator, caricaturist and lithographer from the 1870s to the 1920s. He was also an architect of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. Willette studied for four years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and his work ranged from dainty triviality or political satire. He passed away in 1926 at the age of 69.
Artist: Adolphe Willette
Important Added Info: Note that this was a supplement to Le Courrier Francais, a french weekly illustrated newspaper/magazine which was founded and edited by Jules Roques. It featured sections on literature, fine arts, theater, medicine and finance. We cannot find information about the stage play being promoted by this supplement, but besides creating the artwork, Willette also created the costumes for the production. Interestingly, there is a censored and uncensored version of this artwork. The censored version showed the woman wearing a chemise but this uncensored version has her only wearing one sock!

Also note that this item contains some nudity, so we have placed a white bar over those areas for those who are bothered by such images. Of course, the actual item does not have the white bars.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had darkened and it had surface paper loss scattered across the folds and some around the edges, with some stains scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
