eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 6h0066 TARZAN THE APE MAN Grosset & Dunlap hardcover book 1932 Tarzan of the Apes, ultra rare! Date Sold 4/14/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5" x 7 1/2" [13 x 19 cm]; 392 pages) (Learn More) Tarzan, the Ape Man, the 1932 W.S. Van Dyke jungle adventure action melodrama ("The thrill of thrills!"; "The producers of 'Trader Horn' have again brought out of the African jungle another great romantic thriller!"; "Based upon the Characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs") starring Johnny Weissmuller (in the title role as Tarzan), Neil Hamilton, Maureen O'Sullivan (as Jane), C. Aubrey Smith, Doris Lloyd, Ray Corrigan, Jack Leonard (both as uncredited apes!) and Cheetah (played by an uncredited chimpanzee). Note that Crash Corrigan and Jack Leonard both made a REALLY wise investment in the 1930s, when they acquired "gorilla suits". In many of the movies in the 1930s and 1940s where there is a fake gorilla, it is played by either Crash Corrigan or Jack Leonard, no doubt because they could supply the suits! Of course, this was one of the most successful "franchises" in movie history, with several sequels with Weissmuller and O'Sullivan, and then more movies with just Weissmuller alone (after O'Sullivan left the franchise), and then other actors took up the lead role many different times! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this hardcover book! This is REALLY unusual! After the 1932 MGM movie Tarzan the Ape Man was released and was super successful, someone at Grosset and Dunlap had the idea of reissuing Tarzan of the Apes, the very first Tarzan book originally published in 1914 (and this book has Grosset & Dunlap on the spine, and lists of G&D movie editions on the inside of the dust jacket, and they added a 2" x 17" paper snipe that was placed on top of the entire dust jacket that is an ad for the Tarzan the Ape Man movie and says "The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Photoplay TARZAN, the APE MAN was made from this story", and in fact, this movie WAS based on this book, although they took massive liberties with the plot! So what we are auctioning here is a 1932 Grosset & Dunlap edition of Tarzan of the Apes, which has an added snipe for Tarzan the Ape Man! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up (including showing it with the snipe on the top of it as it is, and with the snipe removed, and know that the snipe is not attached to the dust jacket, but is loose). Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 30 movie edition books (and a few closely related items) that were consigned to us from a man who has collected such books for over half a century! Included are some of the most rare and desirable of these books, and all have the original dust jackets (many times such books lost their dust jackets over the years and they are far more rare with the dust jacket). This is a very rare opportunity to obtain one or more of these books, most of which we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once before! Condition: good to very good. The dust jacket has tears and paper loss in the top and bottom, and creases on the back cover. The book itself is in pretty nice condition (see our many images). Learn More about condition grades
