An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War II Poster (measures 15" x 20 1/4" [38 x 51 cm]) (Learn More) Give 'Em Both Barrels, the 1941 U.S. World War II (WWII) Home Front poster encouraging citizens to help the war effort buy joining the Armed Forces or increasing productivity at home, and featuring Jean Carlu art of a soldier with a heavy machine gun and a worker with a rivet gun in the same pose. Note that in the 1930s during the height of the French Art Deco movement, there were 3 designers that really stood out, Cassandre, Paul Colin and Jean Carlu. During the early part of the second World War, Carlu came to America to visit his brother. During that visit, Germany invaded France and captured Paris. Anxious to contribute to the war effort that now included his home country, he did 2 poster designs for the U.S. war department. The first was called "Production. America's Answer!". While at first it was simply a rallying point for American Labor in the summer of 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor it became the call of the American War effort along with his second poster, "Give em Both Barrels" in which the message surely speaks for itself. Both posters are part of the collections of The Museum of Modern Art and The American War Museum. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jean Carlu Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had some tiny dot stains scattered around the edges with a very few within the image. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
