An Unfolded German Art Exhibition Poster (measures 33 3/4" x 47 3/4" [86 x 121 cm]) (Learn More) Hollandische Kunstausstellung (literally translates to "Dutch Art Exhibition"), the 1903 German poster promoting an exhibition of Dutch art which took place at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld, Germany from May 20th to August 2nd, and featuring art by Johan Thorn Prikker. Thorn Prikker produced Javanese batik-inspired designs which are evident above and below the central text field (the abstract curvilinear pattern of fractured tulips in black and white, set against a bright gold ground). The jagged claw-like motifs and primary colors of this design convey Thorn Prikker's anticipation of the fragmentation and dynamism of German expressionism over the languid lines of Art Nouveau. A copy of this poster hung for many years (and perhaps still does) in MoMA's permanent exhibition on Art Nouveau as one of only a handful of posters representing this art style with its core period from 1895 to 1905. Note that Johan Thorn Prikker is considered among the most important proponents of the Dutch Art Nouveau. While maintaining a career as a symbolist painter, he also produced textile designs, posters, illustration, mosaics, mural paintings, furniture, and stained glass windows. Thorn Prikker studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague from 1883 to 1887. After leaving the school, he joined a group of avant garde artists who produced radically new paintings combining flat, distorted forms, curvilinear movement, somber subject matter, and complex symbolism. From 1900 to 1902 he painted mural decorations including a frieze in the art nouveau style at the Leuring house in The Hague. Later he moved to Germany where he taught at several prestigious schools. Artist: Johan Thorn Prikker Important Added Info: Note that this poster was commissioned by Friedrich Deneken, then director of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld, for an exhibition of Dutch art at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. Condition: very good to fine. The poster was never folded and has extremely minor border wear. Learn More about condition grades
