An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Japanese "B2" Movie Poster (measures 20 1/4" x 28 5/8" [51 x 73 cm]) (Learn More)

Kakushi Toride no San Akunin (released in the U.S. in 1960 as "Hidden Fortress"), the classic 1958 Akira Kurosawa Japanese samurai warrior adventure thriller (George Lucas "borrowed" the plot of the film to make "Star Wars"), starring Toshiro Mifune, Misa Uehara, Minoru Chiaki, Kamatari Fujiwara, Susumu Fujita, and Takashi Shimura. Note that this well regarded Akira Kurosawa Japanese movie surprisingly only received a limited first release in the U.S., and movie paper from that U.S. release is incredibly rare, for unknown reasons. It also apparently had a limited first release in all other English-speaking countries, again for unknown reasons. In 1984, perhaps because it had been the inspiration for "Star Wars" in 1977, an uncut version of the movie was released in the U.S., with the tagline "U.S. Premiere Uncut Version". This restored version was the full 139-minute original version (previously releases had between 15 minutes and 40 minutes cut). Everyone agrees the uncut version is a masterpiece!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this poster is the "local city" Japanese poster for this Kurosawa movie, which is a "country of origin" poster for this Japanese movie and is from the first release in 1958. We have never before auctioned this "local city version" Japanese poster. We previously auctioned a different style first release Japanese B2 poster, and it sold for $718 in only "poor" condition!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had a 7" tear at top center, but only in the light background area. It had some extra creases and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds, with some small tears and pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
