Jazz Heaven, the 1929 Melville W. Brown romantic songwriting musical comedy (this early talking movie contains a lot of plot devices that would soon become major cliches!; a young man dreams of becoming a songwriter, and the girl next door is a singer, and she hears him playing his unfinished song, and she supplies the missing closing; they take the song everywhere, but no one will publish it; he gets a job as a night watchman, and practices on the piano there, and someone flips the wrong switch, and his playing of his song goes out over the air, and everyone in the country wants to buy the song, only no one owns it, so top publishing companies start fighting with each other to buy the rights!) starring Sally O'Neil, Johnny Mack Brown, Clyde Cook, and Joseph Cawthorn. Note that both Sally O'Neil and Johnny Mack Brown were promising young stars in late silents. But Brown had a strong southern accent, and after a few movies like this, he was mostly delegated to cowboy parts. O'Neil fared even worse. She had a strong New Jersey accent, and it didn't "go" with the way she looked, and within a couple of years, she was reduced to supporting roles.
