An Unfolded German Art Exhibition Poster (measures 28 3/4" x 36 1/2" [73 x 93 cm]) (Learn More)

Niederlandisch-Indische Kunstausstellung (literally translates to "Dutch-Indian Art Exhibition"), the 1906 German poster promoting an exhibition of works from the Dutch East Indies to be held at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld, Germany from October 5th to November 4th. Pictured on the poster are Indonesian artifacts being exhibited, specifically Wayang shadow puppets (a form of puppet theater art found in southeast Asia, sometimes combined with human performers). This poster features art by Johan Thorn Prikker. Note that Johan Thorn Prikker is considered among the most important proponents of the Dutch Art Nouveau. While maintaining a career as a symbolist painter, he also produced textile designs, posters, illustration, mosaics, mural paintings, furniture, and stained glass windows. Thorn Prikker studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague from 1883 to 1887. After leaving the school, he joined a group of avant garde artists who produced radically new paintings combining flat, distorted forms, curvilinear movement, somber subject matter, and complex symbolism. From 1900 to 1902 he painted mural decorations including a frieze in the art nouveau style at the Leuring house in The Hague. Later he moved to Germany where he taught at several prestigious schools.
Artist: Johan Thorn Prikker
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned this poster once before, and it sold for $1,240!

Condition: good to very good. The poster has a few creases and small tears along portions of the edges, as well as a few small areas of paper loss, but those defects mostly only affect the dark-colored outside border (one tear at center left is slightly larger and is repaired with tape from the back.) It has a few creases scattered in various areas, but the main artwork of the poster is in really nice condition, and after a pretty simple linenbacking with some border restoration the poster would look wonderful!
