A Linenbacked French Travel Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 39 1/2" [62 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) French National Railroads (Societe Nationale Des Chemins De Fer Francais or S.N.C.F.), the French travel poster ("For traveling in France the railway is the right way"; "Visit France by train"; "Discover France by train") made by the S.N.C.F to encourage travel by the French National Railroad. Each poster features a wonderful image or art of one of the many locations that the railroad visits. The SNCF was founded in 1938 with the nationalization of France's main railway companies. Artist: Adrien Senechal Important Added Info: Note that when this poster was printed, the French tagline at top left originally read "6 hours from Paris", but the examples of this poster we have seen have each had a "5" paper snipe glued over the "6", either because the trains got faster from when the poster was first printed, or because someone miscalculated the time! Also note that this particular poster was advertising a health resort, and the taglines at the bottom translate to "heals rheumatism" and "women's diseases"! We have auctioned a number of posters from this railroad, and most of them have a big white area at the bottom where the place advertised is named. This poster not only has that area in black, but it also has part of the image entering that area. It has really striking art and is likely the best such poster we have ever auctioned. Plombieres les Bains is a town in eastern France. Les bains refers to the hot springs in the area, whose properties were first discovered by the Romans. In succeeding centuries, its baths were visited by Montaigne, Voltaire, Napoleon Bonaparte, Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon III and many more! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had minor wear on the folds, with some tiny tears around the "women's diseases" tagline at lower right (perhaps there was once a snipe over that area). The poster has some creases, scuffs, and tears scattered throughout, with some minor border wear. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
