He was the original "Latin Lover". Some of his movies include: The Sheik, The Son of the Sheik, and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Sadly, Valentino passed away from peritonitis on August 23, 1926 at the age of 31, and at the height of his fame. His funeral was handled by the Frank Ellis Campbell with the help of press agent Harry Klemfuss, and an estimated 100,000 people lined the streets of Manhattan to pay their respects at his viewing, which reportedly led to suicides of fans and an all-day riot on August 24th. Fans even crashed through the window of the funeral home and some tried to take locks of Valentino's hair so the coffin was quickly sealed (there were also rumors that the "body" on display was a wax dummy). Over 100 mounted officers and NYPD's Police Reserve were used to restore order, and officers lined the streets for the remainder of the viewing. Other wild events included actress Pola Negri claiming to be his fiancee and fainting multiple times, and four actors were hired by Klemfuss to impersonate fascist honor guards sent by Benito Mussolini. The funeral mass was held on August 30th at Saint Malachy's Roman Catholic Church in New York. His remains were then taken to California where a second funeral was held at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills. Valentino had no final burial arrangements, but was temporarily interred in a crypt offered by his friend June Mathis, but she died the following year and Valentino was never moved to a new location. Important Added Info: Note that when Rudolph Valentino died at the height of his fame, there was an outpouring of grief not seen before or after. These three great stills come from newspaper or magazine files and they show images of different aspects of the funeral! Condition: good to very good. Learn More about condition grades
