Smash originally ran Spirit stories by Will Eisner, but during World War II, Eisner was in the Armed Forces, and Smash added a Spirit lookalike character called "Midnight" to take his place! Note that the series continued as Lady Luck for the final five issues which were published from December 1949 through August 1950 Artist: Jack Cole Important Added Info: Note that when Will Eisner was serving in World War II, he could not draw The Spirit, so Quality Comics had Jack Cole create a lookalike character called "Midnight", in case Eisner did not return from the war!
