A 1991 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked Autographed One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 26 3/4" x 39 1/2" [68 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Spartacus, the classic 1960 Stanley Kubrick sword-and-sandal Ancient Wars gladiator sports action adventure epic ("Winner of 4 Academy Awards!"; "They trained him to kill for their pleasure... But they trained him a little too well..."; "A mighty motion picture!"; "Based on the novel by Howard Fast"; written by Dalton Trumbo) starring Kirk Douglas (in the title role as Spartacus), Laurence Olivier (as Crassus, who liked both oysters and snails, or was it truffles and artichokes?), Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton (as Gracchus), Peter Ustinov (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Woody Strode (as Draba), Tony Curtis ("as Antoninus"), John Gavin (as Julius Caesar), Charles McGraw (as the gladiator trainer), and Herbert Lom. Note that Kirk Douglas was the producer of this movie and originally Anthony Mann was directing. But three weeks into filming, Douglas fired Mann and replaced him with Stanley Kubrick, who then fired Sabine Bethmann, who had been the female lead, and replaced her with Jean Simmons! Also note that Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted during the HUAAC hearings in the early 1950s, and he was still blacklisted at this time, so he was not going to receive screen credit. Kubrick heard this and wanted to be given the screenwriter credit (since someone had to be credited), but producer Douglas courageously insisted on Trumbo receiving the credit on screen, which effectively ended the blacklist! Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by Kirk Douglas! Our consignor attended a book signing in Houston, where Mr. Douglas was autographing copies of his autobiography, "The Ragman's Son", and Mr. Douglas kindly signed this poster for our consignor. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we feel certain it is authentic. Also note that this one-sheet measures 26 3/4" x 39 1/2" [68 x 100 cm], but it has not been trimmed. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had fine surface paper loss on parts of some foldlines (typical of high-gloss posters of this period). It also had many creases scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Linenbacking has somewhat minimized how noticeable the creases are, but they are certainly still noticeable, so bear that in mind before placing a bid on this poster.
