An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Bordertown, the 1935 Archie Mayo (billed as "Archie L. Mayo") romantic love triangle murder crime film noir ("Immortal drama with immortal stars!"; "Now He's a Fugitive from the Inhuman Bondage of a Female Scarface"; about a Hispanic man who goes to work as a bouncer in a cafe in Mexico on the border by California, and he rises up to become the partner of the owner, but the owner's boss likes him in the wrong way, and she wants him to conspire with her and kill the boss so that they can own the casino and be together, but he has different ideas) starring Paul Muni, Bette Davis, Margaret Lindsay, Eugene Pallette, and Robert Barrat. Note that Warner Bros. in 1940 "lifted" a huge chunk of the plot of this movie and reused it as part of "They Drive By Night", and of course, there are also many similarities to the plot of "The Postman Always Rings Twice"! Note that there is something unusual about this movie. When it was first released, Paul Muni was Warner Bros. top star and Bette Davis received secondary billing to him. When she quickly rose to stardom after this movie was released, the movie was given a quick re-release in 1937, where the two stars were now equally billed. This quick re-release likely explains why first release 1935 paper from this movie is incredibly scarce (and also, the 1934 lobby cards and smaller posters were on a flat finish, while the 1937 re-release ones were on a linen-like paper, which is the reverse of how it is for many other classic 1930s Warner Bros. titles). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY first release U.S. movie paper items from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned two one-sheets (29 years ago for $8,800), a window card (21 years ago for $4,600), an insert, two scene lobby cards (only one in the last 17 years), a herald, and some stills from this movie (and NO other first release U.S. movie paper of any kind) until we received this first release title card, which we have never auctioned before (and we were also consigned a great scene card)! Also note that there are early re-release lobby cards, which are often mistakenly sold as originals. The re-release cards are on a linen finish paper, while these 1935 first release cards are not, and the images and border layout are different in the two sets. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: very good. The card had approximately 1/4" trimmed from the edge of each blank border (but only blank white paper was affected and not the tiny text in the bottom border), and it had a few pinholes, smudges, and tiny stains around the edges. Overall, the card was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card (meaning they backed the card onto a gel material) and they then performed excellent restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the card still exactly looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. You can see the slightest of signs of the restoration, but the card displays really well! Learn More about condition grades
