It began in 1920, shortly after the American Society of Cinematographers was founded in 1919, and at first it was a news letter, first biweekly, and then monthly. In 1929, it became a standard magazine. In the 1930s, it was aimed at both amateurs and professionals, but over time, it solely focused on professionals.
