An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 33" [62 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Flying Down to Rio, the classic 1933 Thornton Freeland South America Rio De Janeiro Brazil airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle musical ("Musical Romance Staged in the Clouds..."; "Too big for the world... So they staged it in the clouds... Too beautiful for words... So they set it to music!"; "Come, take a joy ride through the sky!"; "Romance that soars on the wings of song") starring Dolores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Paul Roulien, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, and Blanche Friderici. Note that this was the first of the ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together, which explains why they were fourth and fifth billed, and not pictured on any poster art! Also note that this movie was made at a time when Hollywood had a "love affair" with South America in general, and Brazil (and Rio de Janeiro). Paul Roulien was a Brazilian singer who came to Hollywood in 1931, and he sang in several movies. In this movie, he was part of a romantic love triangle with Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond, and it was his best role. In 1934, he returned to Brazil and quit acting in 1938. Important Added Info: Note that this pre-war Belgian poster contains images of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, while none of the first release U.S. posters did. The movie was first released in France and most European countries in 1934, and we think it is likely it was released in Belgium at that time, and that this poster would have been printed in that year (note that although Astaire & Rogers are pictured, they received billing below not only Del Rio and Raymond, but also Paul Roulien). But this particular poster was used in 1936 (likely because the movie was still in release there two years later), and in the top printed play dates area, it says "les Celebres danseurs FRED ASTAIRE et GINGER ROGERS dans le Grand film musical", obviously because they had become major stars by 1936! We can exactly date this Belgian poster to 1936 because of the theater imprint at top left, which gives the date. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had extremely tiny paper loss at the middle crossfold, small paper loss at the center of the bottom blank border, and very slight wear on the foldlines and around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. Note that the poster was mounted on a very thin linen, and so it has picked up a few minor creases down the right side of the poster that are in both the poster and the linen (they are not very noticeable or distracting). The person who linenbacked the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges. It would be easy for a talented restorer to re-back this poster on to a better weight linen, leaving some excess around the edges. But with or without re-backing, this is a great poster with few defects! Learn More about condition grades
