Date Sold 7/8/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Jan Sterling was an actress from the 1940s to the 1980s. She was born in Manhattan in 1921, but her wealthy parents divorced when she was eight, and she grew up all over the world, but spent a lot of time in England, where she developed an English accent. At 17, she became a Broadway actress, having much success over the 1940s playing British ladies (she was billed as "Jane Adrian"). In 1947, she got the lead in "Born Yesterday" in its Chicago stage version, and she was a big hit, and it was thought that she would surely appear in the film version, which was made in 1950, but that was not to be (Judy Holliday, who played in the New York stage version, was chosen to play the lead over Sterling). She had great success in the movies in the 1950s, in films such as Caged (1950), Ace in the Hole (1951), Flesh and Fury (1952), and The High & The Mighty (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; 1954). In 1959 her husband, actor Paul Douglas, died of a heart attack, and she quit the movies, returning to New York where she did much TV and stage work. She passed away in 2004 at the age of 83. Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Jan Sterling! It is fascinating for several reasons. First, it is from when she was in Chicago, which is when she played the lead in "Born Yesterday" on the stage (she started in the play in 1947, and this still could be from then, but it has a date stamp on the back from 1948, when she was in the play "John Loves Mary" in Chicago, so it could be from then, or it could be a 1947 still that was reused in 1948). It is a wonderful sexy young portrait of her by Maurice Seymour, who is credited on the front and back. She signed the still a number of years later, and when she saw it, she obviously immediately noticed that it was taken before she had a nose job when she entered Hollywood the following year, because she inscribed it "from me and my old nose"! Our consignor purchased this signed item (and a number of others) many years ago from Larry Edmunds Bookshop in Hollywood. They had just been consigned a large collection from a longtime collector, and our consignor purchased this item along with several others, which he has held all these years and has now consigned to us. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: very good.
