Note that Raffles was a master criminal and jewel thief in a series of 26 short stories and one novel written between 1898 and 1909. The first movie adaptation was in 1905, and it was followed by others in 1917 (with John Barrymore in the lead role), in 1925, and the first sound version was in 1930 with Ronald Colman, and finally, in 1939 with David Niven. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this poster, and only one in the last 15 years! Also note that this is the first release three-sheet from 1939 (it is dated at the bottom of the poster). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some folds, with a few creases and scuffs in non-fold areas. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed with little restoration, and unfortunately, after it was backed, it was very roughly handled, and it was folded across the fold that runs through Niven's forehead and the fold is in the linen as well as the poster, and it has caused the poster to separate across that area. This can be repaired, of course, but bear this significant defect in mind before bidding on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
