An Original Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Gypsy, the 1962 Mervyn LeRoy musical biography ("Warner Bros. presents all the heart and happiness of the Broadway hit..."; "The girl who became the greatest show in show business."; "Everything's coming up roses for you and for you!"; "See the motion picture Hear the soundtrack stereo album Read the book"; "Based upon the play 'Gypsy.'"; "Book by Arthur Laurents"; "Music by Jule Styne"; "Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim"; "Based upon the Memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee"; of famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee) starring Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood (in the title role "as Gypsy Rose Lee"), Karl Malden, Paul Wallace, and Betty Bruce. Note that Gypsy Rose Lee (whose life story was highly fictionalized in this movie) was born in 1911 to the ultimate stage mother, who devoted her life to trying to give her two daughters successful careers in show business (at the time, primarily in vaudeville). Gypsy Rose Lee's birth name was Rose Louise Hovick, but she was called Louise from an early age, and her mother successfully got her a vaudeville career, sometimes with her sister, and sometimes solely by herself. In 1937, at the age of 26, she signed a contract with 20th Century Fox under her mostly real name of Louise Hovick, and she appeared in "Ali Baba Goes to Town" and five more movies in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Her sister broke off contact with both her and her mother, and became the actress June Havoc. While Gypsy Rose Lee did not have a memorable film career, her turbulent and exciting private life (and the play and movie based on it) has made her a household name, even to this day! Also note that this still appears in every way to be original U.S. release EXCEPT that there is one very tiny line of French type in the lower right. It reads, "IMPRIME AUX ETATS-UNIS D'AMERIQUE". A collector has told us that he believes this means the still was printed for use in areas that included French-speaking parts of Canada, but that it WAS printed in the U.S., and that makes complete sense to us (and we have seen this on stills from the 1940s through the early 2000s, so it has certainly been done for an extremely long time)! So it is an original still from 1962, but it was printed partially for use in French-speaking Canada. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
