Date Sold 12/21/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Chapter #1 (The Masked Crusader) Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Masked Marvel, the 1943 Spencer Gordon Bennet (billed as "Spencer Bennet") World War II (WWII) insurance fraud crime action spy espionage serial ("A Republic Serial in 12 Chapters"; "Original Screenplay by Royal Cole, Ronald Davidson, Basil Dickey, Jesse Duffy, Grant Nelson, George Plympton, and Joseph Poland") starring William Forrest, Louise Currie, Johnny Arthur, Rod Bacon, Richard Clarke, Roy Barcroft, Anthony Warde, and Tom Steele (who plays The Masked Marvel throughout the movie, but see below for more!). Note that the plot of this serial concerned an insurance company's investigators who investigate Japanese sabotage of war factories. There is a mysterious super hero type person called The Masked Marvel, and the trick of the movie is that they reveal to you that he is really one of the four insurance investigators, but the audience does not learn who he is, and the four men wear identical suits throughout the movie, so that you can't tell by their clothing (and actually, stuntman Tom Steele plays him throughout)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned four full-color chapter 1 lobby cards in all our years of auctioning! Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The card was folded down the middle. It had an area of paper loss in the left and right of the top border, slightly extending into the image. It had a pinhole in the upper left border. Overall, the card was in good condition prior to restoration. Given the card's defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration.
