An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Autographed One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock San Francisco California suspense obsessive love crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass. Also note that Alfred Hitchcock did not make a final decision on what to name this movie until the last minute! At various times, it had working titles of Darkling I Listen, Fear and Trembling, From Among the Dead, and Illicit Darkening. Many of the early advertising stills don't have a title at all, but say "An Alfred Hitchcock Production". Personally, we think "Vertigo" is a better title than any of those other four! Finally, note that critical acclaim for this movie has consistently risen in the years since it was first released. In fact, in the 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of top movie critics, Vertigo was declared to be the number one film of all time, over Citizen Kane, and every other masterpiece! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Saul Bass Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by the movie's art director, Henry Bumstead! You may not know who Henry Bumstead was, but he had a REALLY great career, and several top directors loved working with him! He made four movies with Alfred Hitchcock (including this one), eight with George Roy Hill, and thirteen with Clint Eastwood. Our consignor was a college professor who knew Mr. Bumstead personally and asked him autograph this poster. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we are certain the signature is authentic. Also note that most collectors don't realize that Saul Bass did many different designs for this classic movie! All look very similar, with the classic swirl, but the two figures are different on many of the posters! Finally, note that there is controversy about the first release one-sheets from this movie. There are known examples where the primary background color is pretty much "red", and then others where the primary background color is pretty much "orange". Some people say that the poster was created with two different colors, while others say that the "orange" one-sheets are simply "red" one-sheets that were exposed to sunlight. I don't have a definitive answer, but because I have seen one-sheets in many different color ranges from pretty clearly red down to almost yellow (where the poster HAS clearly faded), that makes me feel it is possible that the posters were not printed in two different versions, but it is also possible that there were two versions, and some of each have simply faded (and this is further backed by my having seen "orange" versions that have extremely even coloring, which would seem like they were not faded at all). THE ONE-SHEET OFFERED HERE HAS A RED BACKGROUND, FOR THOSE WHO PREFER THAT TO THE ORANGE BACKGROUND! Condition: good to very good. The poster is lightly rippled and creased throughout. It has the tiniest of paper loss at the bottom crossfold and pretty minor fold and border wear. After a pretty simple linenbacking by any talented professional, the poster will display wonderfully!
