Stahl passing-for-white romantic tearjerker melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the novel by Fannie Hurst) starring Claudette Colbert, Warren William, Louise Beavers (one of the first black African Americans to achieve success in mainstream Hollywood movies), Rochelle Hudson, Ned Sparks, Henry Armetta, Baby Jane, Alan Hale Sr., Fredi Washington (a very light-skinned, very talented black African American actress who refused to try to "pass for white", and who appeared in several important black related movies including "The Emperor Jones" and "Black and Tan"; ironically, she had to have her skin darkened, so she could "pass for black"!), Marilyn Knowlden, and Juanita Quigley.
