An Original Vintage Folded World War II Poster (measures 18 1/2" x 25 1/2" [47 x 65 cm]) (Learn More) Of Course I Can, the 1944 U.S. World War II (WWII) Home Front poster ("'I'm patriotic as can be - And ration points won't worry me!"') supporting the conservation of perishable goods, and featuring Dick Williams art of a woman holding several canned goods. There is text on the back of the poster that reads: "You can help to keep our nation well fed by displaying this poster. Home canning is tremendously important this year. Our armed forces are taking the largest percentage of commercially canned fruits and vegetables on record. This year civilians will have less commercially canned fruits and vegetables than ever before. Home canning is the answer... not only for the individual... but every quart of fruits or vegetables canned at home adds just so much more to the total supply. This poster will encourage home canning. Won't you display it... prominently. You will be helping to solve one of the most difficult problems in the world today. You will be helping the war... and the peace. Thank you!". The U.S. government was dealing with this situation by "rationing" canned fruits and vegetables, by giving each citizen a "ration card" that established how much they could purchase from stores, and they were hoping to get more people doing home canning, to ease the massive shortages of canned goods. Artist: Dick Williams Important Added Info: Note that this poster (like most World War II posters) were widely distributed through the mail (to military bases and other locations). They were machine folded, and a very few of them have printing on the back of the area that was on the outside when it was fully folded, giving instructions on how the poster was to be used and displayed (see our image of the back of the poster). We don't know if this printing would be on all examples of this poster, or only some of them. Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: very good to fine. The poster has minor fold and border wear.
