A 1948 Re-release Vintage Theatrical Window Card Movie Poster (measures 14" x 22") (Learn More) A Night at the Opera, the classic 1935 Sam Wood screwball musical opera romantic comedy starring the Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx as Otis B. Driftwood, Chico Marx as Fiorello, and Harpo Marx as Tomasso), Kitty Carlisle (as Rosa Castaldi), Allan Jones (as Ricardo Baroni), Walter Woolf King (billed as "Walter King"; as Rodolfo Lassparri), Sig Ruman (as Herbert Gottlieb), and Margaret Dumont (as Mrs. Claypool). Note that MGM added a romantic plot to the Marx Bros. typical screwball comedy, and it really adds to the movie, as Carlisle and Jones have real chemistry together, and their songs are excellent. Of course, this is also the movie that has the Marx Bros.' most famous comedy scene, the "stateroom" scene, plus the great scene of Groucho and Chico attempting to sign a contract! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Al Hirschfeld Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Also note that the poster says "AN MGM MASTERPIECE REPRINT" in the bottom right. This was a terminology used by MGM at this time for some re-releases, and it has caused some collectors to be confused! This poster is the original poster from the 1948 re-release of this movie, and is NOT a "reprint"! Condition: good. The window card has been professionally paperbacked. Prior to paperbacking, it had had its top trimmed off (extending into the background area just above the letters of "M.G.M.". There were creases and smudges scattered throughout the card, most notably in the yellow background areas. The person who paperbacked the card re-created the missing blank top and did restoration to the rest of the card. They chose to not paint over the solid colored areas (a wise decision in my opinion, because then the card would have had a heavily restored look to it). You can see the scattered smudges throughout the card, but they are not very distracting, and I think most collectors would be happy to display this card on their wall!
