An Original Vintage Linenbacked Russian World War II Poster (measures 23" x 31" [58 x 79 cm]) (Learn More) May 1 (literal translation of the Russian title), the 1943 Russian World War II (WWII) poster (with a tagline that translates to "Let's glorify the freedom of our great Soviet Motherland") and featuring art of Soviet soldiers and equipment along with a factory worker and a farmer on a tractor. Note that on May 1, 1943, Joseph Stalin issued a statement stating that the tide had turned in the war against Germany, and that while they had suffered grave losses in the preceding years, victory for Russia was now in sight (but it would not be two more years, until May 9, 1945, before victory over the Germans would occur). May 1st is known as May Day (also known as the Day of International Workers Solidarity) in Russia and was celebrated illegally in the country until the February Revolution enabled the first legal celebration in 1917. It became an important official holiday of the Soviet Union, celebrated with elaborate popular parade in the center of the major cities. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that someone hand wrote the English language title and the translation in English in the bottom excess linen and also wrote "EDITION OF 200", which certainly seems possible. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was folded once in each direction and had many creases, scuffs, darkening, and a few tears on both folds, and some tears and small paper loss around the edges. There were many scuffs scattered in the central red area, with some in the rest of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Linenbacking the poster has minimized how noticeable the above defects are, but you can still clearly see signs of them. I think most people would still be happy to display this great poster just as it is, but please bear this in mind, and study our super-sized image before placing a bid on this.
