A Linenbacked French Travel Poster (measures 29 3/4" x 31" [76 x 79 cm]) (Learn More) Chinon, the 1927 French railroad railway train travel poster (with a tagline that translates to "Castle ruins") encouraging people to visit Chinon, France using the Chemins De Fer De l'Etat railway. This poster features Germain Lavalley artwork of the ruins of the Chateau de Chinon (which was restored in the early 21st century at a cost of 14.5 million euros). Chemins De Fer De l'Etat (literally translates to "State Railways"), often referred to in France as the Reseau de l'Etat ("State Network") was an early state-owned French railway company. It was established by state order of the Third Republic in 1878 to take over ten small failing railway companies operating in the area between the rivers Loire and Garonne. In 1938, all French railway companies merged to form SNCF (Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais - the French National Railway). Artist: Germain Lavalley Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French travel poster! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded. It had a faint brown line of darkening near the center of the poster, most noticeable in the white area near the center, and there was a smaller amount of similar staining in the middle left, most noticeable in the light colored area (see our image). It had some tiny paper loss in the lower left border, with some small tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed the poster onto linen with no excess and performed no restoration, and at a later date, the right of the bottom of the poster became water stained, extending up around 3" into the poster. The poster is now rippled in those areas, both the poster and the backing. If I owned this poster, I would surely have it removed from the old backing and properly re-backed, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding. Learn More about condition grades
