Date Sold 7/9/2023 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 5 unfolded John Hopps & Sons circa 1940s version of an Italian advertising poster that was originally printed in 1923, promoting a brand of Marsala wine, and featuring art the Roman god Mercury holding multiple flags which are protruding from a bottle of the wine. We have seen other versions of this poster that measure different sizes, but they are all extremely difficult to precisely date. Our best guess is that this poster is from no later than the 1940s. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Measurements: 12 1/2" x 18 1/2"Note that this is one of five lots (in five separate auctions) from a consignor who has multiples of each poster. He knows that he could get more money auctioning them one at a time, but he wants to sell them all at once, so he doesn't wait for his money! So this may be a wonderful opportunity for a dealer or collector to purchase all five and resell some number of them, and likely get at least one for "free", and probably make money besides. We photographed all of them because they are in somewhat varying condition, and they are quite old and we wanted bidders to get to see each poster in this lot. Condition: good. Each of the posters has a strip of brown paper tape on the back of the top and bottom borders and some light staining on the backs, mostly in the bottom, that does not show very much to the front (see our images).
