A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 39" x 54 1/4" [99 x 138 cm]) (Learn More) Hurtu was used as the brand name for cars, bicycles motorcycles, sewing machines and more which were produced by the France-based Diligeon et Cie company from 1896 to 1930. The company was founded in 1880 as Hurtu, Hautin et Diligeon as a maker of sewing machines but soon added machine tools and bicycles to their range. In 1895 E. Diligeon bought out his partners and renamed the company Diligeon et Cie but continued to use the Hurtu name on his products. In 1899 the company was re-organized and renamed as the Compagnie des Automobiles et Cycles Hurtu. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned a small poster that measured 16" x 18" that had a similar image to this, but this is the first time we have auctioned this 39" x 54" French poster with a great image of a French woman riding an 1890s bicycle! Note that this poster ships in a very long tube (at least 33" long, but possibly 50" long or more). Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. You can tell how long of a tube this poster needs to ship in by looking at the shorter dimension of its length and width and then adding 4" to that (so a 47" x 63" poster will need to ship in a 51" long tube). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had many light water stains scattered in the top quarter, and extending lower in the left and right. It also had tiny tears and scuffs along parts of most folds and small tears and some stains around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed it onto a thin linen with no excess and no restoration. A talented restorer can surely remove the poster from the thin linen and "rescue" it. There is a good chance that most or all of the water staining can be removed chemically, and after proper restoration, the poster will display really well, but bear all of the above in mind and look at our super-sized image before bidding on this poster.
