An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Unknown Ranger, the 1936 Spencer Gordon Bennet Texas Rangers horse rustling cowboy western ("Defying the rustlers of the prairie!"; "Meet your new thrill favorite!") starring Bob Allen, Martha Tibbetts, Harry Woods, Hal Taliaferro (billed as "Wally Wales"), and Robert 'Buzz' Henry. Note that Columbia had personal troubles with star Ken Maynard, even though he was very popular, and they signed Bob Allen to make cowboy movies, and this was the first of six that he made for Columbia. But he couldn't sing, and when singing cowboys became all the rage, his cowboy career was over! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good. The poster had paper loss at the crossfolds and many creases, tears, and small areas of paper loss down the vertical foldline. There were extra creases and a few tears on the horizontal foldlines. There were many scattered smudges and tiny dot stains throughout the image, mostly in the solid colored areas. The borders had many tears, smudges, stains, and areas of paper loss. The person who did the restoration put new blank white paper over all the borders to even out the appearance (but the small writing at the bottom of the poster was not covered over). This is a common technique used by several top restorers. It is done so well that the majority of collectors are not even aware it has been done, and many do not feel it to be a significant detraction (since it is only blank white area). Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The person who backed the poster was not as talented as the people who restored many of the linenbacked posters in this auction, and the restorer left alone many of the creases and smudges, but completely painted in the white background area behind Bob Allen's name, and you can both see signs of the restoration in the poster, and you also notice the unrestored areas.
