Both the Underground and Overground are currently controlled by the Transport for London government body which was established in 2000. The London Underground (also known as the Underground or the Tube) has its origins in the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway which was opened in 1863. The early tube lines, originally owned by several private companies, were brought together under the "Underground" brand in the early 20th century. The Underground was a prominent patron of art and design, commissioning many new station buildings, posters and public artworks in a modernist style. The famous London Underground logo was created by Edward Johnston in 1916. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
