Date Sold 8/30/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Beau Brummel, the 1924 Harry Beaumont silent England historic biographical romantic love triangle melodrama ("A Romance of the Most Fascinating Figure of Fact or Fancy"; "By arrangement with Mrs. Richard Mansfield"; "Based on the play by Clyde Fitch"; "The greatest of all love dramas"; set in the early 1800s, loosely based on the life of George Bryon Brummell, who was a soldier with a modest inheritance, but he became the favorite of the Prince of Wales, and he rose in English society; he was famous for his stylish fashion sense and his great wit; but it went to his head, and he gambled himself deep into debt, and he fell out of favor with the prince, and he died in debtor's prison from syphilis!) starring John Barrymore ("America's Most Distinguished Actor"; in the title role as George Bryon 'Beau' Brummel), Mary Astor ("as Lady Margery Alvanev"), Willard Louis ("as The Prince of Wales"), Carmel Myers ("as Lady Hester Stanhope"), Irene Rich ("as The Duchess of York"), and Richard Tucker ("as Lord Stanhope"). Note that Mary Astor was just 18 years old when this movie was made! She had been making movies for two years, and had a major success in this movie opposite John Barrymore (Barrymore had requested her to play the female lead), and the 18 year old Mary had an affair with the 42 year old Barrymore. Her parents broke off the affair with Barrymore and virtually kept her a prisoner in their lavish home. Of course, she went on to be a major star of the 1920s through the 1940s. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The card had 1/4" of its left blank border trimmed off and 1/2" of its right blank border. It also had some pinholes and tears in the rest of the borders, with some surface paper loss on the back of a small part of the card and a few creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the card was in good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card and performed restoration to the above defects and added a small piece of tape on the back of the bottom border to reinforce that area. You can see signs of the restoration, and the defects, but the card displays pretty well. Learn More about condition grades
