Note that this movie dealt with World War II and spies, and it was a clear statement from director Hitchcock that the war would soon involve every country, especially the United States, because there was no way to remain "neutral" when all those around you are at war. Finally, note that the movie credits the screenwriting to Charles Bennett and Joan Harrison, and notes that additional dialog was written by Robert Benchley and James Hilton (celebrated author of Lost Horizon and Goodbye, Mr. Chips), and Ben Hecht and Richard Maibaum apparently also contributed dialog, although they were uncredited!
